I, Robot

This 2004 science fiction thriller won’t be winning any awards, but the world it imagines is scarily close to reality. In this future, robots are common assistants to humans, which have become increasingly dependent on them. But when a robot is implicated in a murder – a seemingly impossible notion given that they are programmed to never harm a person – the threat that poses to humanity causes chaos. As the tech we use becomes ingrained in our lives, the idea of it turning on us isn’t far-fetched. Your smart fridge may not be sophisticated enough to kill you, but it could be used by criminals to hack your personal details. Just as tech helps us evolve, it can also be our downfall.

Avatar

James Cameron’s Avatar was a massive production that transported us into a whole new world. The planet Pandora is a living Gaia supported by native inhabitants known as the Na’vi, which are represented as 10-feet-tall, blue-skinned creatures. Humans from Earth invade the planet to steal its resources, and the resulting conflict is analogous to any battle between colonists and indigenous peoples. The high-tech helicopter gunships of the humans go up against the flying dragons of the Na’vi, and the results are spectacular. Caught in the middle is former Marine Jake Sully, who has lost his legs but can transport himself into the body of a Na’vi via avatar technology. It’s a classic tale of traditional tribes against technological imperialism. And while Jake straddles both worlds, it’s easy to fall in love with the world of Pandora and the ways of the Na’vi.

The Social Network

This semi-historical film is about the Silicon Valley dream of creating a billion-dollar company. The movie is based on Ben Mizrich’s 2009 book, The Accidental Billionaires, about the founding of Facebook by Mark Zuckerberg and his hapless cofounder Eduardo Saverin. Facebook didn’t participate in the film, which is critical of Zuckerberg’s backstabbing ways even as it depicts him as a technical wunderkind. Zuckerberg pretends to work with Harvard upperclassmen Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, but he creates his own social network instead, Thefacebook. Zuckerberg’s network succeeds, and he meets Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake), a Mephistophelian character who helps turn the company into a Silicon Valley success. But Parker outlives his usefulness, and Zuckerberg cuts ties with him as he becomes a billionaire. The film is memorable for finding the Shakespearean drama in the betrayals.

Alita: Battle Angel

We've seen a lot of really, really bad live-action anime adaptations in the past few years, so to watch one that embraces the full scope of its source material while getting as weird and fun as it wants to be is such a joy. Alita: Battle Angel was originally a James Cameron joint more than 10 years ago before he got distracted by Avatar, but the sheer scope of the movie's stunning visuals prove that it was worth the wait. The phrase "hunter warrior" is said a ton of times. There are robot dogs. It's perfect.

Ex Machina

This 2015 psychological thriller follows a young programmer who is selected to be the human component in a Turing test to determine the capabilities and consciousness of a new artificial intelligence robot. AI isn’t a new concept in cinema, but this recent Oscar-nominated movie has solidified itself as one of the best. It essentially warns of the not-so-distant day when robots become indistinguishable from us and the ethical implications that arise from that. Ex Machina questions how far innovation should be pursued and the morality of playing God. As corporations rush to develop better AI in real life, these are all issues that need to be given thought before the tech is unleashed on our world.

Tron : Legacy

Again, this sci-fi thriller sequel isn’t exactly an Oscar winner, but the 1982 original cult classic was one of the first big-screen portrayals of the world inside a computer network or video game ever made. Its influence can be seen in new movies like Ready Player One, and Ralph Breaks the Internet. The more recent Tron follows the son of a virtual world designer who goes looking for his father and ends up trapped inside the digital reality he created. The film explores the universal theme of finding a human connection in a digital world. The original also touched on the plight of real-life programmers or startup founders who have their work stolen by big names or corporations.

Gemini Man

Will Smith as two characters: Henry Brogan, the older, wiser former assassin who just wants to spend the rest of his days in a sleepy fishing village, and Junior, the younger clone of Henry who spends the movie trying to hunt him down and kill him after their assassin agency turns against him. It may feel familiar because the two-decades-old script had been bouncing around Hollywood since before one of the original writers, David Benioff, had ever caught a whiff of Game of Thrones, and it still retains that air of confidence and simplicity. It feels like a classic action-adventure movie because, in part, it is -- what makes it new is all the technology that finally managed to catch up with it.

Chappie

Chappie, one of the police robots, is stolen by criminals who treat it like their own child. With new programming, it becomes the first robot with the ability to feel and think for itself Chappie is created partly by accident and partly by pure pigheadedness on the part of Tetravaal's software developer, Deon. Deon, though the star of the weapons company having created the software that runs a whole squad of Robot police for the city of Johannesburg, has worked on A.I for years without much success. Then comes the day when his software works, but he is denied the chance to actually test it in a body by the company which, as every other company, is focused on pleasing its stockholders and making profit. Determined, Deon steals the damaged body of one of the Robot police and the company's access drive. By shear bad luck, he is abducted on that very day by a group of gangsters who are in deep debt and intend to use his knowledge to turn the robot police off in time for a heist. It is with these that Deon ends up creating Chappie, named so by the only female of the group, Yolandi, in his 'infant' hours. You can watch moew for more.  .
